Psychopharmacology Update for School Nurses: Working Inter-professionally within your environment

Do you feel prepared to care for students taking medication for psychiatric diagnoses? Do you have systems of collaboration established with your school interdisciplinary teams to offer high-quality care across the school setting to these students?


This course is designed to provide school health professionals (SHPs) with up-to-date information on prescribing practices for prevalent mental health conditions and describe best practices for comprehensive medication management and interprofessional collaboration in school settings

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Obtain up-to-date knowledge of medications currently being prescribed to treat psychiatric conditions in youth
  2. Understand the role of the school nurse in monitoring for therapeutic and adverse effects of common medications used to treat psychiatric conditions in youth
  3. Develop the ability to assess the quality of school/district interprofessional behavioral health team culture and collaboration efforts to support students being treated for mental health diagnoses
  4. Identify strategies to enhance collaboration between school professionals in student care planning and implementation
