What actions should a school nurse take when a student discloses sexual abuse or assault?  

This program will provide school nurses with best practice guidance when students make disclosures of sexual abuse/assault. This program will include information on appropriate actions based on what is known about the timing of the abuse/assault, mandated reporting, and access to resources including the MDPH Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program.

After this course, learners will be able to: 

  1. Discuss appropriate responses/actions following disclosures of sexual abuse/assault. 
  2. Describe requirements for mandated reporting for children/teens disclosing sexual abuse/assault or concerns for the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) 
  3. Discuss the role of the MDPH SANE Program as a resource for school nurses. 
  4. Describe indicators for hospital referral and acute evidence collection for children and teens. 
  5. Describe an overview of the forensic exam offered to patients sent to ED post-sexual assault, and principles of empowerment that guide SANE practice.

Training and Outreach Coordinator for the MA Department of Public Health’s Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program

 Karen has been in this role for the past 7 years and previously served as the Central MA SANE Regional Coordinator, overseeing SANE emergency response services at 5 hospitals in Worcester County for 9 years. Karen holds dual degrees, a Bachelor’s degree in Health Education and an Associate’s Degree in Nursing. Karen has been a certified SANE since 1999. During her time with the SANE program, she has cared for hundreds of sexual assault patients and has had a significant role in the development and revision of the MA SANE Program training curriculum and protocols. She has provided numerous trainings across the state for ED clinicians, law enforcement officers, DA offices, and rape crisis advocacy centers. Karen is also involved in the MDPH’s TeleSANE Program. In this role, Karen acts as a “teleSANE” providing clinical consultation through video-conferencing to clinicians caring for sexual assault patients in 10 hospitals, generally located in more remote areas of the Commonwealth. Karen is also certified with the International Association of Forensic Nurses as a SANE- A.  Prior to joining the MA SANE program, Karen was an Emergency Department Nurse and Educator at Milford Regional Medical Center.

 

Cynthia Moore, MSN, RN, CPNP

Clinical Coordinator for the MA Department of Public Health’s Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (Pedi SANE) Program

 Cynthia is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and is certified as an Advanced Forensic Nurse by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.  She is a Pediatric SANE and Adult/Adolescent SANE in Massachusetts. Cynthia formerly served as the Education and Outreach Coordinator for the MA SANE Program’s National TeleNursing Center Project, a U.S. Department of Justice grant-funded project that pioneered and piloted the use of telehealth technology to export SANE expertise to 6 (rural, tribal, and military) sites in Massachusetts, California, and Arizona, using videoconferencing telehealth technology. The MA SANE Program now offers TeleSANE services to 10 hospitals in MA. Additionally, Cynthia has served as the Acting Medical Director of the Child Protection Team at Boston Medical Center and was a Clinical Instructor at Boston University School of Medicine.  Cynthia has provided on-call support as a member of the Child Protection Team at Boston Medical Center, Tufts Medical Center, and UMass Memorial Medical Center, and has frequently testified as an expert witness in her role current role with the MA SANE Program.  She has worked as a pediatric nurse practitioner for the last 20 years and has been a pediatric nurse for 30 years.  She has worked in the field of child abuse and child protection, as well as in child development, for the last 19 years. She has lectured locally, nationally, and internationally, providing training and education to law enforcement, medical and nursing staff, social workers, community agencies, and many other disciplines.  She has served as a member of multiple state and community-based initiatives and committees in the field of child abuse in Massachusetts. Ms. Moore has been a member of the International Association of Forensic Nursing, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, and CHILD, Inc (Children’s Healthcare Is a Legal Duty).  Ms. Moore has also served as a Disaster Services Volunteer for the American Red Cross. Ms. Moore received her Master’s degree from Simmons College and her undergraduate degree from Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing.
